The Joy of Flying: Part III
Another weekend away means more adventures for FireCracker...was it any better this time? I think so. Friday afternoon I managed to leave work early so that I could get to Midway with plenty of time to spare. I needed to do everything in my power to avoid being trapped at the office past 4:30pm, so I intentionally didn't remind my boss I was leaving. If I had mentioned it, she would have called or emailed just as I was about to leave and I would be stuck doing some meaningless task that could wait for another time. Instead I broke free of their chains and ran from my cube as fast as possible, escaping the swirling vortex that is my client.
Once at the airport, I headed straight to the bar for a nice cold beer with which to relax and enjoy my new found freedom. I had expected the airport to be packed with travelers, but I suppose most people chose to leave earlier in the day instead of working like the rest of us, but it made it easy to get around so I was grateful. Getting there early paid off in other ways too. I was able to be the 4th person in line for my flight so I was guaranteed my aisle seat and didn't have to worry about the rest of the herd. It's really the only drawback of taking Southwest, fighting for a decent seat away from the screaming kids and non-stop talkers. I managed to avoid the kids...but not the talker...he sat right beside me and talked the whole flight. He was very nice but I was in the mood to just be on my own, read my book and take a short nap. Somehow, he got distracted by the guy at the window and talked to him most of the time while I managed to get the remainder of the flight in peace.
This trip was pretty standard, with only a short delay of about 30 minutes because we had to wait for the plane, but otherwise it was uneventful. And the best part...having someone waiting for me when I arrived.
