I'm not a slacker...
I'm really not! I've just been forced to work late again and then I was out of town all weekend. I'll try to be better but there are no guarantees. My weekend was amazing though. As always, the day I leave town is the day everything goes wrong at the office. Thankfully, I managed to wrap things up just in time to head to the airport for my trip to see Fenway. The train ride to the airport worked to de-stress my mind and return my focus to the important stuff in my life - having fun and enjoying life with people you care about. I was happy and excited, and unlike last time, I wasn't nervous at all! It was going to be a great weekend.
It had been 5 weeks since I'd seen Fenway so I was desperate to see him again - 5 weeks is a really long time! The moment I spotted him made my heart flutter and I got this great big grin on my face. He looked great and I couldn't wait to be in his arms again. Unfortunately, we still haven't perfected the initial embrace. I always go for the hug first and then want a kiss, and he tends to go for the kiss first, which makes things a little on the awkward side. It all works out in the end, but it takes away from that magical moment just a little.
I'm not going to get into the details of everything we did over the weekend, but there are a few things that will be mentioned - meeting his sister, his parents, our first fight and making up. Friday night we had tickets to the Red Sox game and Fenway decided to take his little sister and cousin with us. She's 19 and full of energy, and I realized after the ride into Boston how much older I am now and how different she is from what I was like at that age. Don't get me wrong, she seems like a great girl, let's just say I was more on the quiet side back then. I did think it was funny that she got embarrassed so easily because of Fenway's yelling during the game - she's just lucky my team wasn't playing or I would've embarrassed her too!
Saturday night, after a wonderfully romantic dinner, Fenway gets a message from his Dad inviting us to breakfast in the morning. I knew that we wouldn't be able to avoid spending time with them, they were much too eager to meet me. So I agreed, on one condition - 'that you will be my boyfriend', or something to that effect. It was time we made it official and I didn't want to meet his parents without actually knowing that we both think of this relationship in the same way. So I now have a boyfriend again, after 2 years of being on my own - and it feels great. His parents were very nice and I think I made a good impression. They even invited me out to dinner the next time I'm in town.
Our first fight was not as good. It was Saturday night after we were out with a couple of his friends. The evening went well, his friends were great and we had fun watching the Waterfire and fireworks display. It was when we left to go home that things started going badly. I don't think Fenway realized how many beverages he had consumed that night, but I noticed on our walk back to the car that he was lethargic and not himself. I got very worried and mentioned to him that I thought he had too much to drink. He claimed he was just tired, that he was fine to drive. I doubted him but let him drive anyway. During the drive I realized the mistake I made, that I should've driven us back but I figured it was too late. Drinking and driving is something that really bothers me, and when we got back to his house I wanted to discuss the situation. Fenway heard everything I said, and understood my concern, but I don't think he realized that his driving skills had been impaired. I didn't want to be a nag, I just wanted him - us - to be safe.
He confirmed my suspicions minutes later when he passed out cold across the bed snoring his head off. Lying from corner to corner, with no place for me to sleep, I tried to wake him so he'd move. I gently shook him, I called his name...nothing. I started getting annoyed. I put my face down to his ear and yelled his name while shaking him harder and he woke - sort of. I managed to get him to take off his shirt and roll over, then he was instantly back to sleep - still hogging the bed! Now I was really pissed. For my own sanity, I got my book, my iPod and headed to the couch to calm down. He had just proven to me that I was right for being worried about the drive home, and then it struck me that we had to be up early for breakfast with his parents and I was stuck on the couch. It was not a good night. At 5am, after about 3 hours, I went back to his room to force him awake and deal with this head on. I was a bit calmer, but still angry. This time, all I had to do was say his name and he woke easily.
'Fenway - do you realize you still have your jeans on?'
'Do you realize you still have your contacts in?'
'Do you realize I've been on the couch for the last 3 hours?'
That's when he comes too and realizes what happened. He had no memory of me waking him the first time. He had no idea I was gone. Now he understood why I had been concerned. And he was apologetic. I was still upset, and now tired too, but I felt better. He now understood where I was coming from and he agreed to be more aware in the future. And then I tried to get some sleep before the alarm went off.
After returning from breakfast, we made a point of taking a nice long nap, which was really just a lot of cuddling and Fenway trying to make up for everything. It was a great way to end our weekend and I enjoyed every moment that we had together. Sure, I was totally spoiled and pampered, but who could complain about that? Don't worry, I wasn't the only one being spoiled that day -- Fenway has nothing to complain about either.
Overall, it was a great weekend - both for us as a couple, and for me in a more personal way. I noticed how much I've grown and matured since my last few relationships. I value myself so much more than in the past and realize that communication isn't as difficult as it may seem. It may not be fun all the time, but it does make for a better, and hopefully stronger relationship. In the past I would have kept my fears to myself and just hoped for the best, but I would've hated myself for doing that so I'm glad I spoke up. And having enough confidence in your beliefs, even if it means confronting someone on them, really does make a difference. I wonder if this means I'm an adult now?

what the f*ck?
They are evil in this place. It is 4:24pm and they just called a meeting for 5pm. Do they not understand that normal people leave at 5? Do they not realize I try really, really hard to be normal? I want to be normal so badly but they just keep messing with me and making me crazy. I don't want to be crazy anymore.

Fiestaware anyone?
The first of many events planned for Tosa's wedding happened on Saturday out in Peoria, IL. A nice relaxing 3 hour drive through the cornfields of the Midwest brought me back to my second family. You see, Tosa and I met back in Canada when we started high school. I don't quite remember how we met, but I do know we've endured a lot together over the years. From psycho boyfriends (mine) to permanent PMS sisters (both of us), we grew to become very good friends. We survived calculus with our quest to do better than the other and the distance by annual visits, highlighted by her Mom's need to discuss her sex life with me. I understand completely how she was traumatized by her mother and 'too much information' has become our mantra when Mom starts talking, followed by 'la la la la la' while covering our ears. Don't get me wrong, I love her Mom, she just doesn't understand that there are some things that are not meant to be shared.
So seeing Tosa at her bridal shower was special for me. She was not very enthusiastic about having the party and was a little afraid of how her sister would torture her, but it was nice to see her surrounded by her family and friends, celebrating her future with Harley. It still amazes me that she will be getting married in two short months - I still think of us as teenagers, not adults - but I know she is ready for this. She was always very selective about who she would date and always came across as the good girl, but even though I wasn't there to witness her devilish behaviour out of high school, I have heard some stories. And now those wild days are officially about to end. She'll be getting married and I'm sure she'll be popping out kids soon after. She has a great future ahead of her and Harley is a very lucky man - Tosa is the best!

I'm on fire
I really am on fire. My legs and shoulders are burning so hot right now I can feel the heat through my clothes. I went kayaking with Violet and Jude, Becca and Alan, and Sam out on Lake Michigan with the air show going on overhead. It has become an annual event and I loved every moment of it. Until I got home and saw the damage. I knew I was burnt, but I didn't realize how badly. I don't remember the last time I was this red. I was good, I was wearing sunscreen, but I guess all the waves and the paddle helped to wash some of it off. So my thighs and shoulders are completely red, my shins are white with a few red blotches and my feet just look really funny. Thankfully I was wearing a hat so my face was spared! Even the back of one of my hands got burnt. Sometimes I really hate the sun.

dilemma averted
What is a Cubs fan to do when faced with two tickets to the White Sox/Yankees game tonight? Who do I root for? It would be impossible to cheer for the Sox, that's just not allowed. But the Yankees...they're just evil and I don't think I could allow myself to hope for them to win. And if Fenway ever found out I did, I think that relationship would be over really fast. Thankfully I don't have to decide since I can't go to the game, but it does bring up another possible dilemma - a White Sox/Cardinals World Series. I would have the same issues with that...not that it will happen, but if we went off the standings today with the best ranked teams, that's what would happen. I'm still hoping for a Cubs/Red Sox series - which the Cubs would ultimately win, but whether that ever happens in my lifetime is up for debate.

I did it!
I actually finished the crossword puzzle. Yes I cheated by looking things up online, but this was still the first time in many years that I've been able to do it. I should've known I'd be able to finish this one - NHL was one of the answers!

promotion! promotion?
I don't know why, but I'm feeling very blah today. It may be that I spent too much time talking with Fenway last night and didn't get much sleep, but I think there's more to it than that.
Yesterday I met with my boss about the transition from Consultant to the glamorous role of Managing Consultant. It's supposed to be a big deal and be great for my career, but after talking with him, it doesn't sound that way. I'll really be doing the same crap I do now, but now I'll have to care about the future of the company. And I don't want to care about them. He's making me stay at this stupid client and now I have to try and build the relationship into something even more profitable for him. They've already given me the raise last year, so this year I don't get one, and the only other perks are quarterly profit sharing and a corporate credit card. Yippee. The profit sharing will maybe get me another 1 or 2%...not really worth it to me. And the card, I'll never get to use it because I need permission to take out clients.
Another thing that bothered me was that now that I'm up to the highest level in my company, he's still treating me like I don't have a clue how to do business or deal with clients. For example, we need to determine the length of time remaining on my current contract, yet he's not comfortable having me look into it with Boss Lady. Which is really stupid on his part since she won't return any of his emails or phone calls. I have direct access to her at any time of day or night with emails, work, home and cell numbers yet he doesn't want me to contact her myself. Does he really think things will be different with her this time? Thankfully, I was able to make him understand that it may be faster to get an answer from her if I spoke with her directly first and then get her to follow up with him later, if necessary. Yet, I don't have the desire to talk to her and have been putting it off since yesterday. I've already spent 5 minutes talking to her about another situation but I'm not ready to discuss my future yet. Probably because I'm not sure what I want to happen in my future.
I never did hear anything from that job I applied for. Hopefully it won't get back to my boss that I applied for a position with that company. I wonder how he'd react if he found out - would he mention it to me? Probably not, but he wouldn't trust me in the future with potential openings at other locations.
So now I'm left trying to motivate myself to work for a company I no longer enjoy working for, with a client that is worse than my employer and even more work ahead of me. I have so much to do today but without something or someone to push me forward, I'm struggling to keep at it. I know that if I could look at the situation in a more positive way that it wouldn't seem so daunting, but that is something that is very hard to do. I think I'll have to try or I'll end up being completely miserable and I don't want to be that way again.
Oh, and the promotion - he won't actually say when it becomes official.

TGIF
I'm supposed to be getting ready to meet Doc out in Wrigleyville right now but I'm really not in the mood. It's been a while since I've seen her but I already know that I'll have some catching up to do, which usually means I never will get to the point where I have as much fun as they do. I had been waiting for her call for about 2 hours now and I had almost given up hope. I know we had plans but I've lost the excitement I had when I was leaving work. I'm now home, I've eaten and my energy levels are dropping. I'm trying to improve things by having some caffeine, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'll still be going out, I'm just not going to rush to get anywhere, especially since they're at a bar I've never enjoyed going to. Hopefully they will want to go somewhere else once I get out.
This morning was very interesting for me. As I arrived at my CTA station, Ernesto made a point of walking me up to the platform, talking baseball the whole time. Unfortunately for me, he made me miss the train that was there so I had to wait for the next one - which was packed! So while I'm waiting, he's trying to flirt, talking about the Cubs and Sox and trying to see if I'd talk football - which is not my thing. I don't mind chatting with him, but I've tried to make him understand that I'm not interested in anything more. But I don't think he's getting the hint. As I was about to get on the next train, he hands me his phone number and says we can talk baseball. Yeah, right. That's exactly what he wants to do. I already had to turn down Festa last night since he sent me an email asking me out, and now I have to figure out how to let Ernesto down too.
Then to top it off, I had a guy on the train trying to get my eye across a crowded car. He was cute enough, but what was I supposed to do? There were about 10 people between us and I'm not really looking for someone else to date right now. So I go back to my paper and forget that he was there. As we get to Fullerton the train stops in a bad way and all I can see is this guy starting to fall out of the corner of my eye. As I turn my head I see him trying to hold on so he doesn't fall on top of the people sitting around him and the only way he can stop himself is by falling into the window. And the next thing you know the glass has shattered from the force of his shoulder. It was amazing to see because it didn't seem like he hit it that hard. And he was fine, not hurt at all. He leaves the train, some seats open up at the front and we're on our way again. When I get to my building, I realize that the guy trying to get my attention on the train works in my building - actually, he works for my client, and we end up sharing the elevator. The only thing that saved me was that Marvin was there too so he and I chatted, with the other guy trying to get involved in the conversation too. Thankfully, I was the first one off so there was no chance of getting asked out again today. Wait - that sounds so bad. Shouldn't I want all the attention??
And now I have to get ready to meet up with Doc who just called to say they're changing bars!

sigh
I have 3 hours to go but I don't know if I can make it. This has been the longest day so far with absolutely NOTHING to do all day. Can anyone give me suggestions for things to do to keep me from going stir crazy??? I've done the crossword, a Sudoku puzzle, read a zillion blogs, tried following the Cubs game but there's a rain delay, and read all my normal online news sites. I'd go to a porn site but they tend to block those. I'm getting to the point where I'd rather have one of those 14 hour days where I was busy. I must be losing it!!

I can't explain it
I'm bored. Bored, bored, bored, bored, bored. I've only done about 25 minutes of work today, surpassing yesterday's total of 5 minutes and Monday's total of 10 minutes. It always amazes me how this client goes from one extreme to the next with the workload, although I really shouldn't complain since for the last week or so I've been able to leave by 5pm.
I thought I'd be able to follow my Cubs during the game today but they are playing so badly that I just can't stand it for very long. The score was 8-1 for the Reds in the 4th inning, but at least the pain is almost over. They're pretty much past the point of no return where they can't even win the wild card, so once that happens I can continue on with my life and start to focus on hockey. I have only one more ticket to use for the season and will probably avoid buying any more unless I have nothing better to do. It seems like such a waste to spend $50 to see talented players lose so badly. Maybe next year things will be different...or not.
The only thing keeping me going today has been Fenway. He surprised me by calling on my way into work this morning. We had talked last night about if we should start planning our September visit and I guess the first thing he did this morning was confirm being able to take the time off. Once I was able to confirm getting the same time off, I called him back and he booked his flight to Chicago. He will be back here for Labour Day weekend...a whole 4 days after my visit to him! We actually get to spend two weekends in a row together which hopefully will make up for the 5 weeks apart. I can't wait!!

Saturday...
So as I mentioned in my last post, I was headed out to the North Halsted Market Days festival where I met up with Cubbie Girl. I had never been to this particular festival before but it was lots of fun and much more interesting than most because of the wide range of people in attendance. There were the guys in kilt-like skirts, many others wearing tight shorts and no shirts, one guy in a dark purple mesh tank top with a fluorescent yellow thong, and a guy dressed like Marilyn Manson with long black hair, makeup, a long black coat and platform boots that had to be over a foot high. Definitely a fun crowd! We walked around for a while, had some food and even drank some sangria from juice boxes. It was one of the more upscale festivals I've ever been to, with a good selection of beverages to choose from - beer, wine, slushies, and of course champagne! What's a festival without champagne?!
Considering most of the crowd was gay men, CG and I were quite surprised when I got my ass grabbed as we were standing around talking. Out of nowhere a guy grabs it, says something to me - which I never quite got because I was too stunned, and walks off. Later we run into Festa, a guy CG has met many times before, who was there selling his t-shirts. He looked like he was about to pass out in his chair, but as the three of us were talking, he managed to wake himself up enough to try and impress me with his knowledge of Canada, naming all the provinces and 2 of the 3 territories. I had made a point of telling him he needs to start making t-shirts for Canadians since what he's created are fun but I could never wear them. Almost every one of them say 'all-American girl', which obviously does not apply to me and I would not feel comfortable wearing something that says that - I'm too loyal to my country. And the whole time we're talking I'm clueless to the fact that he's trying to hit on me until the very end after I've given him my email address to get on his mailing list. Oops!
A little bit later, CG and I end up meeting Scott who comes into town every year from Louisville, KY just for this festival. He was there with a group of friends and CG noticed him because of his t-shirt...it was from some cartoon that was a little before my time so I can't remember the name of it. Scott was such a nice guy and he was really easy to talk with. The three of us were having a great time until another guy from his group, I'll call him the Straight Guy, started getting into our conversation and disrupting the flow of things. I could see the mood change and Scott was getting annoyed and started distancing himself from SG. The conversation became more of an argument instead of something fun and light like it had been. CG and I were also getting annoyed. This guy was trying way to hard to be liked and it wasn't working for him. Scott managed to make a break for it when another group of his friends appeared, but our only escape was to head to the loo at Roscoe's, a gay bar at the corner.
Our return to the festival was met with the desire to walk around and check out all the booths, one of which was a dessert booth. I was not at all hungry but the guy inside kept trying to push us to buy some chocolate covered strawberries...but I wasn't interested. He was determined for us to have some so he turns around and gets us two wonderful strawberries and hands them out to us for dipping. How could I refuse? I couldn't, so I headed straight for the dark chocolate fountain, covered every inch of that strawberry and indulged in a little piece of heaven. It was wonderful.
We wandered a little more, listened to some music, and did a little window shopping before heading home for the evening. It was still early for a Saturday, but I was tired and had made plans to play tennis on Sunday so I needed to get a good nights sleep. It was a great day and for the first time it actually felt like summer for me. I need more days like this!

A Busy Saturday
The day started with a trip to the bank to close out one of my accounts. The bank was pretty much empty and the women that helped me was very nice and friendly. It was a much better experience than I expected. The usual protocol for them is to hand me over to someone else to question why I'm closing my account, but I just told them a half truth - that I didn't need 2 savings accounts considering one of them really doesn't have much of a balance, so she just processed it herself. In reality, I'm tired of getting 0.10% interest on the account and want to transfer most of my money to a different bank, and this was just the first step.
The next thing on my list of things to do was not for a few hours, so I took the opportunity to walk around my neighbourhood. It was a beautiful morning and the sun was shining, but there was very little humidity so it was perfect to be out in. I was only planning to walk a few blocks, but ended up walking at least a couple of miles. I would've gone further but I was only wearing flip flops and my legs were starting to hurt, so I had to head home. My intention was to grab some water and then do some yoga to stretch out, but Fenway calls just as I'm crossing the street to get to my place. Instead of yoga, I stretch out on the couch and have a great chat with Fenway who was headed out to NY to spend some time with his friends. I guess the drive is not much fun normally, but I think I helped pass the time for him even with the numerous times we were disconnected. We always have good talks and this time was no different. We discussed many things including a lot of our firsts - first boyfriend/girlfriend, first kisses, first time we had sex. I was a little worried where this conversation would go, but it was really just the basics and stuff I didn't mind sharing...I'll even share with you. First boyfriend - I was 12 and all we did was sit together on the school bus and we had one dance together at a school dance. We barely even talked to each other because we were both so shy. First kiss - with my second bf when I was 16. First time I had sex - was with the psycho ex-bf when I was either 17 or 18...I try not to remember too many details. We had been dating for about a year before I finally caved and gave into his pleading to have sex. I never really wanted to and I never really enjoyed it with him, I just thought it would be easier to say yes than to keep saying no. Big mistake on my part. Once we started he constantly wanted more, so I had to still say no to him a lot. He did a lot to make sex something that I never really enjoyed. Thankfully, I've grown up a lot since then and I now know what I want and how I want to be treated by a man, so I won't make those same mistakes again. And I really love having sex now!
After my chat with Fenway, I headed out to the salon to finally get my hair cut. It has been so long since my last visit and my hair was getting out of control. It felt so good to have someone else take care of me...a shampoo, with a little neck massage thrown in was exactly what I needed. And then she cut my hair and it looked amazing...and I was very happy! So it was off to VS to get my free panties and then a short walk to the North Halsted Market Days festival. There is lots more to tell, but I need to get out and do some shopping so you'll just have to wait until later.

I did it!
Yay! I just applied for a new job!!!
And now I'm worried like you wouldn't believe that they'll want me. Don't get me wrong, I want a new job, but this was just really unexpected. I got a call from a girl I used to work with - at this dreaded client that's still torturing me - and she had just planned to chat and see how the project was. Little did she know that my real boss had talked to her consulting company and word got back to me about openings at her client. And I had been planning to contact her once I had updated my resume...which I'd been putting off.
My boss had been looking for just another consulting opportunity for me to take advantage of, but little did he know I would be willing to jump ship and go full-time with someone else. His little trick of trying to bribe me with a little bonus for my hard work is just not enough to keep me there now that I know he won't help me escape the madness. He even mentioned the promised promotion to Managing Consultant - promised back in November - and said we'd discuss the transition once he got back from vacation. Do I have any desire for that promotion? Only for the awesome title to add to my resume, otherwise it's extra work during my free time and a little bit of profit sharing. They've already given me the raise that comes with the job so I wouldn't expect much more. And since I don't have much free time left, I can't see it making my life better - only worse.
So when Nitha called, the wheels were set in motion. We talked about the job and how she liked it there. It got me excited and before I knew it I had agreed to send my resume and then 5 minutes after getting off the phone, she emailed to say she talked to her boss about me and he wants my resume ASAP! And of course this means she talked me up and made me sound amazing so now I really had to follow through on the resume! But what will happen now??
Scenario 1 - I get offered a job, which will be a long commute each day, but I get to have normal hours and work with at least one person I like. There would have to be a salary increase to make it worthwhile, but I think I could manage it again. It's got to be better than what I put up with now.
Scenario 2 - I get an interview but don't get offered a job. No big deal, as long as I can get some interview experience I'm okay with that. It's not like I'll quit my job without something else first.
Scenario 3 - They laugh their asses off when they see my resume and never call me. I'm okay with that too since I don't have a great desire to drive to the burbs and start paying for gas and car maintenance and dealing with road rage. I only spent a couple of hours on the resume and it still needs some work so it wouldn't surprise me too much.
Scenario 4 - I start applying to a ton of jobs and have to pick and choose between the hundreds of offers I'm given. ;)
I'll keep you posted!

get a life
I feel like I'm starting to get my life back...even if it's just a teeny tiny piece of it. For the first time in a really long time I actually went to see a movie! It was great. I was able to leave work at a decent time and I wasn't exhausted, so I called up Cubbie Girl. She suggested being outside somewhere, but I really wanted to do something different...hence the movie. It ended up being a choice between Wedding Crashers and Must Love Dogs and we opted for the chick flick.
When I told Fenway of our choice he just groaned. I guess he hoped I wasn't that kind of girl, but if he had looked at my DVD collection, he would've known the truth....all chick flicks, a couple Harry Potter movies and A Few Good Men thrown in just to mix things up. He's got nothing to worry about though. I refuse to see those types of movies with guys since they just end up ruining it for me. I want to be able to cry (when necessary) without being laughed at or harassed about it later. This movie didn't cause any tears, but there were a few good laughs and some don't do it's along the way.
The one great thing about the movie was that it wasn't geared towards teen girls. It's a movie made for women, one that many women can relate to. It doesn't hurt that John Cusack and Dermot Mulroney were part of the cast, but John is trying very hard not to look his age and looked a little strange this time around. My guess was botox, but CG thought they just used a lot of makeup. Stockard Channing was having issues too...I hope it was the makeup otherwise she needs some serious help. Dermot was as sexy as ever, even with the salt & pepper hair...too bad he played such an ass.
The plan for tonight is to leave work early - again! I guess I should really say leave work on time, since 5pm is not really early is it. Then I'll be meeting up with Caterpillar and her friends to celebrate her birthday and her 2nd interview for the job she really, really wants! It should be a great time and I'm really looking forward to it. I've even got tentative plans for tennis this weekend. It's been so long...I hope I can still play somewhat decently! Not sure what the rest of the week will hold, but I'm looking forward to every moment of free time I get.
